The Great Hall at Meadowdale High School is a space dedicated exclusively to music performance. The design team was instructed not to consider any other venue; drama or other speech based performance types, in the design. Unfortunately, what did need to be accommodated in this same space was lunch. So the Great Hall became the Concert Hall/Lunchroom.The space is long and rectangular, a modified shoebox shape with a flat floor. Retractable bleachers provide the seating for concert mode. The biggest, single challenge acoustically was retaining the desirable early reflections and reverberation necessary for a concert venue without creating an overly noisy space for a large crowd of diners. The solution was to apply an absorptive material to the entire ceiling surface to control the noise levels during lunch, and design a series of overhead reflectors that would drop into place during concert mode. These overhead reflectors provide strong, early reflections for all seats in the audience. They also serve to lower the ceiling over the performance area, providing diffusion for the performers increasing the level of communication between musicians and projecting the sound into the audience.
Greenbusch Group also developed the audio design for the Great Hall, Black Box Theater and Gymnasium. The Great Hall was designed to function as a concert hall, with the operation of the audio system closely interwoven with the acoustical design. The speakers also retracted with the reflectors when not in use.
