Projects - Elevators

In a current project, Pat is project manager and lead engineer for modernization of 44 elevators in 24 buildings of the Seattle Housing Authority. Both geared traction and hydraulic elevators are involved. As in most of his elevator projects, the work includes upgrades to related mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems, and to machine room configurations. The contract documents he prepared also include a 7-year maintenance contract for approximately 100 elevators.

The University of Washington also is a major client, and Pat has been providing engineering services there continually since 1987, completing such diverse projects as a) replacing an old traction freight elevator with a new hydraulic machine, b) replacing a water-hydraulic elevator with a new oil-hydraulic unit, c) design for modernization of a traction elevator, extending it downward for an additional floor, d) relocating a machine room as part of hydraulic elevator renovation, and e) making elevator traffic projections and recommending elevator configurations for two new major buildings. At the UW-managed Harborview Medical Center, Pat is lead engineer for full renovation of three traction elevators in the oldest building and seismic upgrades to six other elevators. In all, his work on and off campus has included 30 projects in 34 buildings with 10 new and 3 replacement elevator installations and 43 elevator renovations. In 1987, he conducted a survey of the approximately 180 elevators on campus at that time and prepared a long term renovation plan. He then wrote the first elevator guide specification for the University’s Facility Design Information manual, and updated it 10 years later.

At the Capitol Campus in Olympia, he provided analysis of horizontal and vertical pedestrian traffic requirements in two office buildings with escalator-based vertical services, then schematic design and cost estimates of alternatives to meet changing demand. His recommendations included elevator and stairway supplements in one building, replacement of escalators with elevators in the other. Previous projects on the Campus were a) modernization of 4 elevators in the Legislative (Capitol) Building, including construction of two new machine rooms and other improvements for fire safety, and b) modernization of three cars and addition of a fourth in two historic-register office buildings.
